AFFILIATED SCHOOLS

Vancouver Japanese Language School & Japanese Hall

Established in 1906, the Vancouver Japanese Language School & Japanese Hall (VJLS-JH) [Vancouver Nihon-go Gakko narabi ni Nikkei Jin Kaikan] is a non-profit, community-based and driven organization, committed to education, culture and community.

VJLS-JH is a BC-certified non-profit organization that strives to teach and disseminate Japanese language education and culture. Founded in 1906, VJLS-JH is the oldest Japanese language school in Canada and the only remaining pre-Internment building to be operated by the Japanese Canadian community. In 2019 it was designated as a National Historic Site of Canada.

Burnaby Japanese Language School

Established in 1983, Burnaby Japanese Language School (BJLS) was founded by Japanese parents who understood the importance of providing a formal education of the Japanese language to their children in Canada.  In 1997, BJLS officially became an independent non-profit organization.

For over 30 years, through the cooperation of both teachers and parents, BJLS has been providing Heritage Course classes for children who speak Japanese at home. Since 2008, we have added Fundamental Course classes for children who do not speak Japanese at home.

West Point Grey Japanese School

The West Point Grey Community Centre in Vancouver offers Japanese language classes for children. These classes are available for ages 3-5 years old and include both preschool and after-school programs. The centre also offers summer Japanese classes for kids. The community centre is located at 1355 West 16th Ave, Vancouver, BC V6J 2K

Gladstone Japanese Language School

When we first established the school in 1971, we had the desire to promote “communication between parents and children” and “Japanese language learning as Japanese people,” and to act as a “bridge across the Pacific.” Now, we want students to utilize “Japanese from an international perspective.”

The name Gladstone Japanese Language School comes from the fact that I started a Terakoya-style classroom there when my house was on Gladstone Street in Vancouver. My belief is to “teach with passion for education and love for students.” I hope that students, parents, and teachers will work together as one to deepen their interest and understanding of Japanese culture through Japanese language, and to nurture students who aim for self-improvement.

Steveston Japanese Language School

The school lies in Steveston (Richmond) where the history of Japanese Canadians originated. The classrooms are located in the Steveston Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, an ideal location for children and adults to learn Japanese language and culture.

Not only do we offer a wide range of classes for both children and adults, but we also hold separate classes for Japanese speaking families and non Japanese speaking families.

Japanese Educational Centre (JEC)

Creating vessels for learning: Academics, sports, music. An open attitude is important for improvement in anything. At JEC, we foster an open attitude to learn, which is necessary for the future in any field, starting from the preschool age of 2 years old, according to age.

Improve your communication skills in Japanese: We strive to improve your ability to speak, listen, write, and read in Japanese

Cultivating a spirit of mutual respect: We foster an understanding of others regardless of race, culture, age, gender, or language ability.

Coquitlam Japanese Language Academy

At CJLA, we have prepared many fun activities that will make your children think, “Japanese language school is fun!” When children who learn Japanese in Canada enter elementary school, they will continue to come to school (Japanese language school) after their local school is over for many years.

The most important thing to keep Japanese is to “continue”. However, as they get older, the number of things they want to do increases, and it becomes more difficult to maintain motivation for learning Japanese.

Surrey Japanese Language School

Surrey Japanese School was established in 1978 and since then has been operated by the parents. The participants develop a better understanding of the Japanese culture and of the mutual relationships between Canada and Japan, while contributing toward their overall education.

The target is a close cooperation between STUDENTS, PARENTS and TEACHERS to improve the quality and standard of education at the school.

  • To educate in the cheerful class atmosphere
  • To promote the study of Japanese which is based on sound teaching methods
  • To foster the children’s thinking ability and develop their communication through the language
  • To provide an opportunity for parents and children to communicate by helping with their homework, thus home learning takes place and the students become more familiar with the language
