The 26th JALTA-sponsored “Storytelling Presentation” was held on Sunday, February 8, 2026, from 1:00 PM at the Vancouver Japanese Language School and the Japanese Hall. This annual event features students from the eight member Japanese language schools who study Japanese weekly, presenting their stories. It’s a valuable opportunity for both the participants and their parents, as they rarely have the chance to hear stories from students outside their own school. The Storytelling Presentation began in 1999 with 16 elementary school students, 11 middle/high school students, 6 beginner-level students, and 2 intermediate-level students, providing an opportunity for students to showcase their learning achievements across school boundaries.

Consul General Yoshiaki Takahashi of the Consulate-General of Japan in Vancouver attended as a guest. At the start of the event, Consul General Takahashi offered words of encouragement to the participants.

The rules for the storytelling competition stipulate that each presentation will be 2-3 minutes long, depending on the level, and that presentations must be memorized and delivered without reading from a script.

Unfortunately, one participant was absent this time, but the 19 contestants enthusiastically presented their original stories, as well as recitations of their favorite stories and poems.

Following the presentations, as in previous years, there was a supporting performance of Shuntaro Tanikawa’s “Atashi no A, Anata no A” by the theater group Za-Daikon. The passionate performance by the troupe members was met with enthusiastic applause from everyone in the audience.

This event is entirely planned,orgaized and run by JALTA executives. Furthermore, the contestants’ teachers, despite their busy schedules, provided support in various ways leading up to the presentations. Without everyone’s help, this event would not have continued for so long. We express our sincere gratitude to everyone involved.

JALTA主催「第26回お話発表会」が2026年2月8日（日曜日）午後１時より、バンクーバー日本語学校並びに日系人会館で行われました。加盟校８校の日本語学校で毎週日本語を学んでいる生徒たちが「お話」を披露する毎年恒例のイベントです。普段はなかなか自分の学校以外の生徒の話を聞く機会がないため、出場者、そしてその保護者にとっても大変貴重な機会です。お話発表会は学校間の垣根を超えて普段の学習成果を発表する機会を提供するため１９９９年に、小学科１６名、中学・高等科１１名、基礎科初級６名、基礎科中級２名で始まった会です。

　当日は在バンクーバー日本国総領事館・髙橋良明総領事が来賓として出席されました。会が始まるにあたり出場者は、高橋総領事から励ましのお言葉をいただきました。

お話発表会の規定は、発表時間はレベルにより各2～3分で、原稿を読むことなく覚えて発表するものです。

今回は残念ながら１名欠席でしたが、１９名の出場者が元気よく自分のオリジナルのお話、好きなお話や詩の暗誦を披露しました。

発表の後は例年通り、座・だいこんによる、谷川俊太郎作「あたしのあ、あなたのア」の賛助公演があり、劇団員による熱のこもった演技に会場全員が盛んな拍手を送っていました。

この会はJALTA役員が計画から運営まですべてを担当しています。また、出場者の担任の教師も忙しい合間を縫って、発表当日まで様々な面でサポートしてくださいました。皆さんのお力添えなしにはこの会はこのように長きにわたって続くことはなかったと思います。関係者の皆さんに心よりお礼申し上げます。
